MID-WEEK GEEK

There is seriously nothing going on.

Adele – Hometown Glory (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix) <---- I hate their name. And laughed when I saw they had remixed this, but they have actually pulled it off. Beautiful track by the London songstress (i.e the less annoying Duffy). The remix is only short but has a dubstep element to it, really interesting.

Kid Cudi Vs. Crookers – Day ‘N’ Night (Rusko’s Big Trombone Remix)<---- Normally I wouldn't post this, but it's the best dubstep remix I've heard of it. Typical Rusko; filthy bass with bleeps.

Yuksek Feat. Chromeo – So Down <---- Dave 1 is my hero. One of the best basslines of 2K9.

Bonus nude Daisy Lowe.

Enjoy.

Not Today

I feel sorry for Champagne enthusiasts. Bars worldwide are continually bastardizing this beautiful form of wine. In today's (23.02.2009) NT News, they felt the need to draw attention to the new bar at the casino 'Sand Bar'. Hats off the casino for providing something different for Darwinians. Although I won't go into detail about the poor selection of music, terrible lighting, un-trained bartenders, incorrect cocktail menu and epic fail on the demographic part.

I will however draw attention to the following:

Verbatim.

"According to the menu, the cocktail is a fusion of babicka wormwood, vodka, parma pomegranite liqueuer, paraiso lychee liqueuer and fresh watermelon topped with Dom Perignon".

First of all it's Babicka Wormwood Vodka. (Vodka that is distilled from Wormwood) and it's PAMA Pomegranite Liqueuer. Why must the NT News embarass themselves further? Furthermore, minus the champagne this cocktail would run for approximately $15. (Currently retailing for $500)

Seriously, leave it alone. Drink it in a chilled flute with no accompaniments.

MID-WEEK GEEK

Bird Peterson just released his new e.p "Your Parents Are Still Making Sweet, Sweet Love". Following up from his tracks like 'Shooked' and 'The Jump Off'. He makes pretty good music for a ranga.

Bird Peterson – Pete Goes Off

Bird Peterson – The Essence

Tracks are MPEG so just make sure you save them properly.

Hudson Mohawke or "Hud Mo" is a producer from Scotland. His approach fuses electro, prog, some odd vocals and dirty beats. "Overnight" is taken from his e.p from last year titled "Polyfolk Dance". Only a short track but very refreshing nontheless.

DAEDELUS BABY

This is footage of Daedelus (aka Alfred Darlington) playing on the Dublab Rooftop in LA. He's been making music since 2001 (or prior) on various record labels such as Ninja Tune, Warp and Mush Records.

I have been slightly obsessed with his work for a while now and I noticed that both he and Four Tet use some fascinating gadgets live. After seeing Little Boots use one on Later With Jules I had to find out more about it.

Daedelus has been one of the dominant pioneers of using the 'Monome' live. A Monome is a grid with backlit buttons that connects to a computer by USB and OSC Protocol. It was invented by musician Brian Crabtree in 2005. They are quite rare and have a very limited production line. Essentially it allows for a greater diversity of functionality over differing musical software applications.

A few things I have picked up from various research;

- Each row triggers a loop and you can change the loop's speed and direction.
- Buttons can be sequenced and looped automatically.
- Rows are the duration and columns are the pitch.

The name Monome is derived from the mathematical term 'Monomial', a gesture to the concept of many variables made possible through something that is nevertheless singular or simple in nature. As you can see, it provides endless possibilities when playing live.

"More than anything I wanted a controller that could dynamically adapt to different uses".

"By sharing as much as possible, we encourage others to do the same".

"Community enthusiasm has allowed us to exist without the traditional business avenues".

- Crabtree et al.

"Kid Cuti"

Photobucket

If anyone was listening to Hot 100 at approximately 16:00 hours on the 16th of February 2009 they would have heard the radio presenter say the following:

Verbatim.

"I think Limewire is about the meltdown because we just had so many people calling up to find out the name of that song. It was 'Day and Night' by 'Kid Cuti' remixed by Crookers. It is 'brand new' music to Hot 100".

Not only was this track released in July 2008, his name is KID CUDI. Furthermore, why does this presenter feel the need the blatantly promote limewire on air? This is exactly what we're trying to stop with this blog.

Kid Cudi or Scott Mescudi to his mum, is a young MC from Ohio who is signed to Fools Gold Records (A-Trak's Label). He is an amazing freestyle rapper and I urge everyone to go out and PAY for his album "Plain Pat Presents a Kid Named Cudi".

iTunes and Beatport both have the album and the remix available for purcahse on their respective sites.

peace and love from the blogosphere.

ITM # 1

After nabbing top honours at the In The Mix Dj Awards 2008, Tydi made his triumphant return to the Northern Territory on Saturday night. For those who don't remember, Tydi used to play in Darwin a year or two ago...only he played at The Rox and Time. (During his Darwin Hiatus, he managed to release a few tracks, obtain residency at Family in Brisbane and get signed to Amarda Records i.e Armin Van Buurin's label.)

Now, I was a little sceptical about a Trance Dj playing at a venue that typically plays house/electro/mainstream etc, however not to be discouraged, he took to the stage with a half capacity crowd. The less than enthusiastic punters weren’t exactly receptive to his opening track nor his second (I thought 'Angel on my Shoulders' was a sure thing?).

He then made the very odd transition into some live Daft Punk which shook the crowd a little, however he still needed help from the MC to get the crowd going.

We left after about half an hour still not convinced he deserved the number 1 spot.

Post Scipt: Yo Tydi, what's with your shoes? ITM # 1 and your still wearing those white budget adidas-esque sneakers?

KRAFTWERK TRIBUTE @ Happy Yess Friday 13th

Happy Yess threw a Kraftwerk Tribute on Friday. We attended with ears ready for delightful sounds being covered by bands and sets by deejays.

Megan Spencer of Triple J fame was a guest dj for the evening expressing her visible adoration for the god fathers of electro/kraut rock/minimal bleep rock. The night included Kraftwerk covers and dj sets consisting of singles, b sides and rarities along with other tracks by artists influenced by the band.

Tracks by Gary Numan, Bikini Kill, Joy Division, New Order, Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five and Senor Coconut gave the very diverse crowd a very good reason to dance up a storm.

All in all it was a great night and it was good to see that so many people haven't forgotten Karaftwerk as they are such an influential band.

Bit of DUBSTEP for your asses!

Rusko". j. and goony were luckily enough to see him doing what he does best.

Heres some dubstep guys, I'm really getting into this at the moment. Thanks to Jezza for the heads up well and truly ahead of time. Dropped in some Dubstep on the weekend in my set it was taken pretty well, not sure about the owners and bar staff haha. But hey cant please everyone...

Quite complex in production, Dubstep takes the mad tweaks sounds and beats to a whole new level, you ll know exactly what I mean with these 3 pearlers! From trying to produce some of my own music there's a lot of respect and appreciation for those who make Dubstep.

Pro Nails Rusko Remix – Kid Sister ©

RIP! - Forum

http://www3.nfb.ca/webextension/rip-a-remix-manifesto/

Above is a link to a trailer of a movie which is premiering in a few cinema's around Australia. It has won a swag of awards and is really causing controversy.

It's a documentary loosley based around Greg Gillis aka Girl Talk and the copyright/remix culture. I won't give my full opinion on this as I'm in two minds about the whole concept, but I would like open a forum (the first ever on Weird Boobs) as to what you think about downloading, the record industry, copyright and everything in between. Click on the comment section below.

I won't lie and say that I don't like Girl Talk and preach that he has sold out etc, because he is a very talented composer. And he has openly admitted that he is not a dj and remains very level headed about his fame. (Feed the Animals is his 4th studio record)

The fact that Triple J has picked him up and shaken his mash up mastery all over Australia shouldn't really take away from the fact that up until recently he worked a full time job and only did his music as side project and is a very talented individual. He also adopted the Radiohead policy of "pay what you feel" with his new album, so I do have a fair bit of respect for him.

On the other hand, he can be labelled as a "One Trick Pony" who essentially steals or 'samples' other artists' music, jams it all together to make a song that comprises of a lot of genuinely good songs. This leads into the debate regarding copyright, the music industry, downloads, supporting musicians etc etc. As well as the issue of dj's being paid to play in clubs using music that they haven't rightfully paid for.

Here at Weird Boobs we are avid supporters of sites such as Beatport and even iTunes at a stretch. After all the musicians wouldn't be making music if they had no financial backing and support. Below are a few quotes from the trailer.

"The same thing is happening with copyright that happened with masturbation, people are actually starting to admit to each other "Yeah...I do it too"."

"Sharing is the nature of creation."

"If this is a crime, then we have a whole generation of criminals."

LUN DUN

Theophilus London not only has the ill-est name in NY hip hop, he's also got mad flow. Having well and truly surpassed my Cool Kids/Lil' Wayne/Murs phase, London has piqued my interest at just the right time.

Hailing from NYC, London released a mixtape with 'Machine Drum' in January this year that garnered a decent amount of hype. Two tracks have been released.

Theophilus London – Crazy Cousins

Theophilus London – Always Love You <---- Sampling "Always Love You" by none other than "Don't call me Whitney Bobby" Ms. Houston.

Both at 320.

MID-WEEK GEEK

The weekend was dreary. Hot Potato seriously need to get their sound sorted out. Bass killing your drums in the stairwell and on the dance floor and reverberation at the top bar.

Verbatim: "It sounds like the dj started getting into electronic music in 2006, bought a heap of ministry compilations and never really expanded from their..."

How could we forget Discovery? Resident dj dropped the remix of "White Noise" by Living End that stole the 'Wow...bass' from Crookers which went straight into a hip hop mega mix circa '95. (Consisting of California Love...scratching included)

Enjoy the following delights.

Passion Pit – Sleepy Head (LOL Boys Remix) <---- One of the best tracks of 2K8. Boston based group who's lead singer wrote the e.p for his girlfriend then decided to give it to his friends as well. Highly rec their e.p 'Chunk of Change' available on itunes. Never heard of the LOL Boys but the remix is a gem.

Autechre – Bike <----- From Manchester signed to Warp Records. Similar to Squarepusher and Aphex Twin (If I may make that comparison). Beautiful track. At 780 KBPS as well!!

Dj Sneak (Feat. Kid Infinity) – Droppin’ Kisses (Herve Edit) <----Reppin' Chii-town. Sneak is an amazing turntablist. As per usual, Herve made it a great club track with a quirky beat and tight bassline.

Was he even nominated?

Little Bootslhh

Little Boots on Later With Jules.

Weird Boobs loves her for the following reasons:

- She sings with a lisssp.
- She recruited Fake Blood to remix her track "Stuck on Repeat" (One of the finest remixes of the last year)
- She uses a stylophone live.
- She goes on Later with Jules!
- She reps a double side braid.

V.V Brown – Leave (Feat. Little Boots) <---- V.V Brown is signed to Island Records, voted #8 on Vogue's Don't Miss List. Blah blah I just love the vocals.

*Thanks to Big Stereo for the heads up on this and BiBaBiDi for the V.V Brown Track.
** Track is only 128 KBPS.

Shane-o's Farewell - The Fox

Weirdboobs weird dudes, J & K and special guest Spermwhale took over the Fox on Mitchell Street on Saturday night for the farewell of partygoer and weirdboobs enthusiast Shano.

Photobucket

The crowd were blessed with Spermwhale's selection of deep minimalistic sounds and tech delight. The atmosphere felt was like no other place in Darwin, the intriguing sounds brought people off the street inside with interest piqued.

Photobucket

All in all it was a great night, only to be disappointed when we left to another venue which we will not name! We recorded the sets of kb and have posted them up for you all. Spermwhale's mixes will be posted shortly keep checking back, a preview of Spermwhale's sounds can be heard on the first 10mins of KBs set.

Photobucket

Photobucket

KB's set was a fusion of deep progressive and filthy electro. A few sound and tech issues (silence at 20 minutes 32 secs) didn't stop him from throwing down a very enjoyable set. And to finish off his complete and utter disregard for genres in general, he even threw in a dubstep finale with some Rusko and Tron.

The mixes are only 128 KBPS, our apologies. Once again, playlists can be supplied upon request and the photo's are on that social networking site.

Many thanks to those who attended and weird boobs wishes Shano the best of luck with his future endeavors. MAY THE HUMAN TRIANGLE DOMINATE THE WEST COAST. ***Sorry the photo's are fucked. Blogspot is shit. Click on them for a full view.

MID-WEEK GEEK

We're not taking the blog down. Get used to it.

I encourage everyone who reads this to request any tracks that you like when you go out. (Fuck, Darwin dj's why not play these tracks? They're better than your shitty limewire downloads).

Sorry for not having more info on these guys.

Fukkk Off – Rave is King (Le Castle Vania Remix) <---- These guys are from Hamburg and have been likened to The Bloody Beetroots and Fake Blood. Le Castle Vania is on remix duties. Takes you back to the Mylo days.

Fukkk Off – The Bottom (Original Mix) <----- I really hated their name to begin with (not as much as Chewy Chocolate Cookies...I still refuse to listen to them). Dope track.

Marina & The Diamonds - Obsessions <---- Apparently she's the new Little Boots.

Murdoch Media

Below is an article written in last weeks NT News' Entertainment Section.

Journalism is an art. This is an abomination.

"Does alternative music still exist?" Of course it does you fucking tit. Just because a band who were relatively unknown until post sophmore albums start selling out stadiums does not mean that alternative music has died. Furthermore, just because The Triple J Hottest 100 featured mainstream artists in the top 10 does not warrant this comment either. Triple J is a nation wide radio station that appeals to a broad demographic. Essentially it is a radio station for everyone who wants to feel like they listen to alternative music.

The Hottest 100 clocked over 800, 000 votes hence the majority of the votes are going to be the most popular/mainstream.

In closing, Murdoch Media can get fucked.

Laneway

Now in its 3rd year, the Brisbane St Jeromes Laneway Festival has had a rather extensive facelift. This year saw a new venue, sponsors and direction. Having been to the original site of the Melbourne St Jeromes Laneway, one can't help but think the organisers have shot themselves in the foot with this years venue change (being that Alexandria St is hardly a fucking laneway) and the fact that the larger venue did not sell out. Four Thousand and Red Bull Music Academy jumped on board as sponsors this year, which was a refreshing change. All things aside, let the reviewing begin.

We arrived just in time (With medium to severe Gin Sweats) to see Pivot take to the Car Park Stage (which was under a freeway of some sort?). They played a pretty tight set, although you couldn't help but think they were taking the piss out of the crowd at times with their "Australia...yeahhh!" antics. They played some of "Make Me Love You" but focused more on "O Soundtrack". "In the Blood" and "O Soundtrack" to finish were standouts.

From there we stumbled onto Tim Fite at the Red Bull Stage (best stage ever, Red Bull you own my heart). Really, really odd blend of hip hop with DIY powerpoint presentation about stabbing cat sandwiches? Very strange.

Ran over to see Born Ruffians starting their set at the Alexandria St stage. Poor little skinny Canadians were very sunburnt and sweaty. Absolutely stellar performance nonetheless. They had a very interesting stage set up with all 3 of them in line putting them in direct sunlight. They were really appreciative of the small crowd that gathered. Ended with Hummingbird (of course).

I have never believed the hype about No Age so I watched them from the bar however they did surprise me a little bit (definitely pissed I missed Port O'Brien though!!) although they didn't live up the blog-tastic media they attained in 2K8 with their thrashy, lo-fi punk. Reasonable set. Although Darren Spunk has a pretty sweet name and he cruised around with Jay Reatard afterwards and spoke to a few people.

Around about this time Jonny, Alicia and I made our way to the Red Bull stage to settle in as we didn't really want to move from there for the rest of the night. Harmonic 313 was incredible. This is the solo project Global Communication’s Mark Pritchard. He fuses “Detroit-Style” Instrumental Hip-Hop with a touch of b-more funk and even threw in a little bit of dubstep. Really interesting set and got us all ready for Rusko who was up next.

Rusko is probably the skinniest little geezer ever (and has a rats tail, although I didn't hate him straight away...odd). With one of my most played tracks at the moment being his remix of Kid Sister's 'Pro Nails', he did not disappoint. He had so much energy and played a killer set of really left field dubstep along with some very dance-able crumping beats. Stand out was him playing an insane remix of Fatboy Slim's "What The Fuck" that I'd never heard before.

Straight after that was Four Tet. My god, words cannot describe how good he was. He was so calm and pleasant. Stand outs were "Ringer", "Pockets" and "A Joy" (Fuck, A Joy was so good). He was just phenomenal. Jonny told me that when he sent his latest album to get mastered they did little to nothing to it. And anyone who saw him live can attest to that.

About this stage I lost everyone, however there was no way I was missing El Guincho. He took to the stage accompanied by a percussionist (a little bit disappointing there wasn't a steel drum in sight). He ran through most of Alegranza hitting all of his spanish high notes. There was a really happy vibe throughout the albeit tiny crowd. ***Many thanks to Bridget for being my El Guincho friend and now lays claim the to owner of the hottest thing any girl has ever said to me at a festival "Drink up, I'm going to get you another beer".

Found everyone and we joined the 30 or so other people who weren’t at Girltalk and got ready for Buraka Som Sistema. So glad I didn't go to Girltalk, Buraka were so good. They were so appreciative of the small crowd and had just the right amount of energy. Because it was a Dj/Mc set they only touched on a few tracks from "From Buraka to the World Ep" and "Black Diamond" but were entertaining nonetheless. Ended with their version of Snap!'s "Rhythm is a Dancer" which evoked a little bit of nostalgia and everyone remembered the 90's trance era.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS:

- Jax being a human walking billboard for Future Music Festival...FREE TRANCE, GET YOUR FREE TRANCE!!
- Really good chicken satays that managed to stain our teeth.
- Tiger being the beer sponsor for the festival.
- Jax and Jess getting their blood pressure taken for no reason.
- Alicia's quote "Omg all I can see is Pre-Pixie Geldoff...EVERYWHERE!!"
- The world's longest human barrel.
- The arse smacking competition.
- Alicia and Jax having the same taste in women.
- Jonny meeting Rusko, Alicia meeting Four Tet, Jax meeting Buraka.
- Drinking tallies in the street and being convinced that Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was beneath us.
- Hustling a shirt to get into Ric's.
- The girls in Ric's.
- Plymouth and tonics at Ric's.
- Getting kicked out of Ric's.
