Introducing The Gooseflesh, Turkish Delight Electro Duo

Hailing from Istanbul, Gooseflesh is the duo created in 2007 by producers Ulas Pakkan and Volkan Akaalp, two electro troubadours with quite significantly different backgrounds. Ulas Pakkan (aka Jackdied) was studying mechanical engineering while playing drums for a few rock and jazz bands, while Volkan Akaalp (aka Jasko) was a student at the cinema academy until he quit his division and focused on music production & djing. Gooseflesh was created shortly after the two men's encounter and has since been acclaimed as Turkey's most relevant up-and-coming electro act, making waves in the electro scene from Berlin to Montreal.
They are now one of Turkey's most sought after electronic music producer (they lately remixed Digitalism, Donzelle, Play Paul and Cut Copy!!), with their atypical concoctions of haunting nu-school techno, with tracks and remixes out on Coco Machete, Big Splash and Boxon Records among others. "taken from their bio"

The duo placed second in the Digitalism remix competition of Taken Away last year, probably one of my favorite of the remixes going around, does justice to the track really.

Just stumbled across these guys the other night, very nice polished sounds and awesome rocking out with cowbells in Taken Away remix. Check out their myspace page for their tracks. www.myspace.com/thegooseflesh or buy off beatport.

Their new ep is out have a looksy.

Bit early to predict but keep your eyes and ears on these guys think they will blow up this year for sure!

NTBR - Not To Be Reproduced

Originally an art space/vintage fashion boutique, NTBR was created circa late 2007 in the LA Hills. Each month they run one of a kind performances for the patrons of the store.

Previous performances include; Devendra Banhart, Justin Bond, A.M Holmes and most notably Lykke Li (who covered Ric Ross' "Hustlin", so dope).

Check out their website: http://www.nottobereproduced.com/

- There is also a live version of her cover of "Can I Kick It?" (Tribe) floating around. Poor quality but worth it.

Hot Potato

Not only is this the worst name for a venue ever, this "club" failed to pique our interest as a new destination to occupy our weekends in Darwin. One can't help think that this is a tax arbitrage scheme for Discovery, being run by the same manager, drinks provided by the same tenders and music provided by the same pathetic excuse for a Dj.

The roller coaster of terrible experiences starts at the front door, with the door bitch winning the title of "Biggest Cunt Ever", (yes that's you blondie). After we were given our free arm bands she told us we still had to line up. Many thanks to Jay on the door for ignoring the bitch and letting us in.

Walking in you can't help but feel like herded cattle. As soon as you're down the stairs, you hit the dance floor straight away. Not only did they breach their "one person per square metre" guidelines, you couldn't even choose which way you wanted to walk. Not to mention the ridiculously uneven ratio they had of males to females. The "herd" shuffled you towards the bar where you see washed up disco workers who just couldn't keep up. One thing they did get right and that is the amount of bartenders. Although they managed to fuck that up with an appalling back bar and more post mix guns than a Gaza Strip soft drink invasion.

After receiving our drink is a plastic cup (has glassing really gotten that out of control?), we were back in the stream of people who walked along the 'lounge area' (which already smelt horribe, nice work on that record timing) and down to the dance floor. Again not surprising was the poor quality of the sound system they were running, really disappointing.

Now, I'm aware that no Dj is game enough to drop anything but Hot 100's day mix with a bass line, but really, this was fucked. From memory it went "Poker Face" to "Got it From My Mama" to Beyonce??

After staying for about 45 minutes (44 too long) we left disappointed yet not surprised. Anyway, here are a few tracks to take your mind off the continual assault of commercial shit thrown at you each weekend.

Alesha Dixon – The Boy Does Nothing (Fred Falke Remix) <---- Anything Fred Falke touches is fucking gold. From a little research, Alesha Dixon is that akin to Ricki Lee in the UK. Basically a washed up X-Factor contestant. Falke is God.

Joe & Will Ask? – Surge <----- This track takes a while to warm up. You'll be surprised at about 1.35.

Revolver – Can’t Stand (ZZZ Remix) <---- What is becoming trademark ZZZ piano interludes. Dirty bass as well.

KB & Goony - Mixes from January 17.

I had a few people over to my place on Saturday night. KB and Goony did a few mixes that I recorded on my laptop.

Goony (Dave) is a friend of Pete's from Newcastle. He uses Ableton when playing. KB did his set on cdj's.

Highlights included Goony dropping "Where's My Money? by Tron (Caspa Remix), dubstep out of nowhere. KB mixing the shit out of Afrojacker by Machines Don't Care and everybody losing their shit to 'Satisfaction' by Rolling Stones (Disco Tech Remix).

Once again, email us for a track listing.

Darwin - Far Behind in Both Music and Fashion?

The Darwin nightlife is what you would call commercial, no depth and leaves a bad taste in your mouth at the end of the night. I'm sick of going out and seeing people who tell me how much they hate the same clique clubs and djs but they still continue to go out and throw their hard earned money away. When something good comes along, ie. SNAFU's first night Vs. Pajama Party @ Discovery, guess where everyone went? The fact that SNAFU had Jaime Doom from the Bang Gang Deejays (One of the most sort after dj's, played with Daft Punk on the Nevereverland Tour, Modular) people still went to the pajama party, because "oh fuck yeah, we can wear our pajamas to Discovery on a normal night and get slapped with a $30 entry fee?" Fair enough SNAFU's timing was out, promo was not as good as it could of been, people knew about it but chose the same shit. Whenever other promoters throw events they are all taking a huge risk because of the mentality of the Darwin people.

Disappointment is the new club Hot Potato, the name says it all, we were all promised something different but whenever it comes down to it no one is game enough in this city to take a risk. I'm not saying I'm the cutting edge of music, but there has to be more choice for the Darwin nightowls? I appreciate all forms of music, but when the same songs are being played in the same order every weekend something is severely wrong.

In the end the locals dj's and promoters that steer clear of the clique and monotonous musical directions need to step up and educate the people. But first they need to get given a chance? Will this happen in 2009 only time will tell, we will give it a good shot...

You can support us by emailing us directly with ideas and thoughts!

Enough whinging heres a couple of tracks to ease your tuesday pain.

First track is by Jaunt its a few months old but has a distinct journey to it and is very fitting during the week misery.

Secondly this one from 1st Class, very deep tech sound great track.

Quicksand

La Roux is about to blow up, so I thought I'd post this one quickly. (Been around since December, but holidays etc) She's like a french ranga version of Lykke Li.

Signed to Kitsune, she recently garnered some attention when she was included on Kitsune Maison 6 (The Melodic One).

Label mate BeNi (Half of Riot In Belgium...RIP) is on remixing duties. Nice snare and a killer bass line.

Sydney Festival

Photobucket

Nothing ever happens in January. Apart from the odd music festival, it really is a lack luster month.

Sydney may be a pretentious cunt of a city, however it does manage to redeem itself at this time of year. Sydney Festival runs from January 10 - 31 and offers a bunch of free gigs, films and even closes a few streets for a block party-esque rave.

The line up includes: Bon Iver, A-Trak, Santogold, Camille, The Cinematic Orchestra, Grace Jones, The Matthew Herbert Big Band, St Vincent, Four Tet, Z-Trip, Mr. Scruff and so on.

"Williams' Blood" has been doing the rounds lately and there are more remixes than empty Macquarie Bank executive car parks but the Aeroplane Dub is a stand out.

ZZZ - Lion

Photobucket

This track has been floating around for a while. I don't know too much about them, apart from the fact that they're from Melbourne and this particular track took a looooong time to reach us due to artwork changes, production issues etc. Their e.p has just been released on Bang Gang.

All I can say is that it rivals 'Pjanoo' and the breakdown at 2.06 is mind melting.

Enjoy.

All Tomorrows Parties

A festival/project/vision named after a Velvet Underground song, Barry Hogan (ATP founder) is currently my hero in the music industry.

Created in 1999, Hogan organises music festivals that are curated by seminal musicians/artists. Previous curators include: Thurston Moore, The Dirty Three, The Shins, Sleater Kinney, Devendra Banhart, Modest Mouse etc.

The inaugural Australian event has been currated by Nick Cave and I strongly urge anyone in Brisbane to check it out. (After all we are in the midst of a Global Financial Crisis and Niburu is coming in 2012, we may never get to see it again). The Saints and Fuck Buttons are playing, need I say more?

This project is slowly renewing my faith in music.

R.I.P

Stooges lead guitarist Ron Asheton has been found dead in his Michigan home. He was 60.

His cause of death is unconfirmed, although early reports are saying it was likely due to a heart attack.

Asheton was a founding members of the Stooges, along with his brother Scott, bassist Dave Alexander and frontman Iggy Pop.

He co-wrote punk rock anthems like No Fun and I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Muscles is a dick.

Unless you have been laying low, hibernating and/or got too crunked out at your office Xmas party and are only now surfacing back into 'the real world' then you would know all about the very public meltdown and one-man publicity campaign of Melbourne electronic artist Muscles.

For those just catching up, here is a brief rundown of what has been happening:

October 27
Muscles releases a statement saying that he will be deleting his MySpace page. He claims he is unhappy about the creation of MySpace Music - a joint initiative between MySpace, EMI, Sony BMG, Universal, Warner and Sony ATV - stating that the deal was unfair to independent artists. At the time this went to 'press' (January 8, 2009) Muscles' MySpace was still active.

December 2
Muscles announces on his website that Modular (his record label) have cancelled his performance at Nevereverland - the label's 10th anniversary birthday celebration/festival.

December 3
Modular responds and says that Muscles is still signed to their label and they haven't cancelled his appearance at the festival.

December 4
Muscles calls bullshit on Modular's response and claims he is "quiting the biz".

December 16
Muscles plays at Meredith Music Festival. From all reports his performance was highly entertaining and with 0% public breakdown.

December 17
Muscles announces that he will be suing Modular over his Nevereverland cancellation for "breach of contract".

December 22
Muscles plays a show with Tim Rogers (yes.. the You Am I frontman) at The Corner Hotel. It is described as the best/worst gig of the year. He also officially retires (again) from "the business" and claims he will focus more on producing - starting with Tim Rogers' next solo project.

AND NOW...

Muscles has posted a NEW song up on his MySpace (which he still hasn't deleted) called Time. It's a duet with cringeworthy wanker singer-songwriter Ben Lee AND it's as terrible as you are imagining it would be. Muscial vomitron.

To add some extra sprinkles of shit on top of the shit pie Muscles has also recorded a 'special' cover of Ben Lee's current single I Love Pop Music, which you can also hear on his (yep, still) un-deleted MySpace page. Holy fuckballs!

Now, we never really loved the music of Muscles. We thought his debut was a slow walk through the land of bedroom electronica - with tiresome music layered with painfully dull vocals.

That said, this whole very very public meltdown is incredibly painful to watch and (dare I say) extremely sad. Muscles IS a talented home-grown musician who we think has the ability to create some great music BUT this whole headline grabbing fiasco is doing nothing but destroy his public image. Judging from the general response around the place (read: da internetz) it seems as though he is losing fans at a rapid rate. Soon he won't have any option BUT to quit music!

Despite his several claims of retirement it appears as though Muscles is still pushing ahead with his new album Manhood, which he claims to have almost completed. You can view all of the album teasers up his YouTube channel and keep up to date with his day-to-day antics by following him on Twitter.

Falls Festival - Marion Bay

Falls Festival has been running in Marion Bay for the past 6 years and not only has it become a great way to avoid New Year calamities, its also a wonderful festival in a spectacular location.

Rumors were circulating earlier in the year that the owners of the land were not going to permit the festival this year due to the site being destroyed every year. However the organisers have outdone themselves when it comes to satisfying Green groups, with drink incentives for collecting recyclables and compost toilets etc etc.

Walking into the Marion Bay site you can see why they would want to preserve this land. Falls Festival consists of dense forrest cover and sweeping green fields and by the end of it, I couldn't help but feel like a cunt remembering when I dropped the odd can on the ground.

- (Saw A.I.H at the airport. Very nice people who say hello and have a chat)

The Tasmanian (and AFP) police were very thorough this year in stamping out drugs at the festival. We had to line up our bags twice to have the sniffer dogs run through them. To their credit it was refreshing to see happy faces at a festival that weren't eating their lips or punching on.

Approximately 9, 000 people arrived on the first day to enjoy some local dj's followed by the other 7, 000 the next day, hence our delayed arrival. Luckily we were able to catch The Dodo's at the start of their set.

The Dodo's - Field Stage

This was their first Australian gig and they fucking nailed it. The (normally) two piece from San Francisco were joined by another gentlemen on a few songs to provide keys and percussion. The crowd were less than enthused but Meric Long (lead) sung with a lot of passion and ran through most of Visitor plus a few e.p tracks. Ending with Red & Purple I thoroughly enjoyed their set.

Wolf & Cub - Main Stage

The only thing that draw me to this band is the fact that they have 2 drummers. They haven't really evolved much as a band since I saw them last, still really fuzzed out and living vicariously through Deep Purple. Average set.

- One of the downfalls of Marion Bay is that they are often 2nd priority to Lorne when it comes to the New Year performers.

Architecture in Helsinki - Main Stage

They did the same set as Meredith which was disappointing. Although it was fun to see everyone reminisce on their childhood when they covered the Never Ending Story Theme song. Their new material sounds great live, they even put a few vocoded "That Beep"'s in for good measure. The lead singer looks a lot like the guy from Spoon.

Fleet Foxes - Field Stage

Nothing pleased me more than to see 90% of the punters leave the main stage when Mystery Jets started. Only to get to the Field stage to see that said punters had clearly gone to their tents to get wasted…not to see Fleet Foxes. Fleet Foxes were a stand out. Absolutely majestical. Sound was perfect. I’d heard about their impromptu shows at SXSW and Robin Pecknold did not disappoint. “Sun It Rises” and “He Doesn’t Know Why” were obvious stand outs.

Cut Off Your Hands - Field Stage

They were ok... The lead belted out some single drum percussion whilst singing which was interesting. They shouldn't have ended with "Oh Girl"...

Eli "Paper Boy" Reid - Main Stage

Really surprised me. He had a 7 piece band that he worked with really well. This motherfucker has soul. 3 guys on horns made it even better. Honestly hadn't heard much from him but he definitely made me a fan.

Blue King Brown - Main Stage

Did the same old shit. I knew she'd start preaching and she did. I support global warming activists and whatnot but I don't need to hear it at a festival. The guitarists did do a cover of "Thunderstruck" though which was impressive.

The Grates - Main Stage

Never cease to put on a lively show. They still have Conan as their tech/percussion guy! He is a genius. Their new tracks sound good live. Even managed to drop in some e.p tracks. It'd be refreshing to hear some B sides but judging by everyone's reaction to "Aw Yeah" you can tell they made the right set list decisions.

Gomez fucking suck. Yawn-town.

Franz Ferdinand - Main Stage

With the main stage having a few sound problems on the first day, it took Franz about 4 songs to really get into their set. Ulysses sounded sharp and the festival favorite "Michael" got the crowd going. Reasonable set, however they seemed less than enthused.

Jamie Lidell - Main Stage

The crowed thinned as Jamie took the stage (he had the 1.40 am time slot), however he still put on (in my opinion) the best set of the day. Widely renowned for his improv shows, this was no different with a little bit of scatting, various solos and the 7 person band working together seamlessly. "A Little Bit of Feel Good" was a stand out and ended with "Multiply".

A-Trak - Main Stage

Fuck this guy amazing. He was the first and youngest Canadian to win DMC at age 15. I had never seen him play live before but it became quite obvious as to why he is Kanye's tour dj. Absolutely flawless mixing. He played a very club friendly set incorporating a lot of loops and some insane scatching. Apparently he uses Serrato, which is interesting because I thought the majority of the U.S/Canadian guys used Ableton. Hands down one of the best sets I have ever seen.

DAY 2

Soko - Field Stage

Absolutely fucking pathetic. I can't believe I missed Tame Impala for this. She wailed through her first song singing out of key and her guitar wasn't tuned correctly. After fumbling through the next few song she then mumbled in french something about "when we become more popular we can afford a guitar tech to tune our guitars"?? She then insisted on having a toy tiger tied around her neck for a particular song, which kept falling off. Then to top it off, she failed to save herself and murdered both of her singles. (She almost whispered "I'll Kill Her") She obviously hasn't been playing live for very long.

Grafton Primary - Main Stage

They have really evolved. The lead singer is a touch creepy (rang-er wearing a little bit too much leather). Tight synths and an enjoyable set nonetheless.

Lykke Li - Field Stage

Amazing. Definitely a highlight of the festival. The field stage was at about one quarter capacity, which was fine a lot more dancing space. She had no female back up singers but had vocoder vocals partnered with some brilliant percussion. She went through most of the album plus some e.p tracks. Stand outs were "I'm Good, I'm Gone" and her version of "Dance, Dance, Dance" mashed with "Oxford Comma" that lead to a solo marathon (with Li even belting out a little drum solo of her own.) I'd heard rumors that she covered "Can I Kick It?" in her live sets. Needless to say, I lost my shit when she absolutely nailed it in her encore. She even did a little bit of crumping.

Tegan & Sara - Main Stage

They seemed uninterested and just went through the motions with their set... There was a little bit of crowd banter in their cute Canadian accents, but not much else.

- Faker fucking suck. I seriously hate them. Nathan is a cocky fuck.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Main Stage

The Dap-Kings warmed up prior to the tiny Miss Jones taking to the stage. The 8-piece, horn orientated band ran through some their own tracks before she took the stage. Jones clocks in at about 5 foot nothing (with heels on), however she still manages to belt out the high notes perfectly and get her Brooklyn shuffle on.

The Kooks - Main Stage

I'd never seen the Kooks before. I've heard a lot about their sets, with the insane groupies, platinum status in the UK etc. Apart from the arrogance of Luke Pritchard, who was drunk as fuck and the shy genius attitude of Hugh Harris they actually played a really tight set. Seeing them live, you can't help but think that they have awful lot of hits, which is not a problem at all, however it is quite evident in their stage presence. You could hardly understand a word Pritchard was saying in between songs and Harris hardly said a word underneath his trilby.

Ash Grunwald - Field Stage

A really talented down to earth Australian musician. He played for an extra half an hour and really appreciated the crowd, it was uplifting to see.

The Hives – Main Stage

The Swedish quintet brought in the new year with renewed vigor. According to Howlin’, the band celebrated their 15th year together this very day. And after seeing them a few times before, one can’t help but be pleasantly surprised every time I see them. Always dressed so sharply and Stones-like stage presence. They ran through some of Veni Vici and Your New Favourite Band. Solid set with some scaffold climbs included.

Late of the Pier – Main Stage

I really felt sorry for these guys. Not only did the crowd thin out, but it was quite evident that the majority of them didn’t know who they were… Instrument malfunctions and poorly set up percussion plagued them however they kept playing looked like they were having fun. Andrew Faley or “Francis Dudley Dance” as he prefers to be called, absolutely goes crazy on his sampler and synth. “The Bears Are Coming” and the insane breakdown of “Bathroom Gurgle” seemed to pique the crowds interest, even if it was only 500 strong…

Genius

Acoustic version of "I'm Good, I'm Gone" with Robyn, Adam & Bebban (Shout Out Louds), Daniel (The Concretes), Lars (Laakso) and Mikael (Hjamlmar).

Sounds even better live.
